Israel's Military Actions Spark International Outcry

Israel's recent attacks on U. N. bases in Lebanon have sparked a wave of international criticism. The incident happened on Thursday morning when an Israeli tank fired at the U. N. Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) headquarters in Naqoura, injuring two peacekeepers. These peacekeepers, who were later identified as Indonesian nationals, were not seriously hurt but were taken to the hospital. The attack also caused damage to other U. N. bases in Labbouneh and Naqoura. Indonesia's ambassador to the U. N. , Hari Prabowo, strongly condemned the attack, calling it a deliberate attempt to spread terror and intimidate the peacekeeping mission and the international community. UNIFIL, created in 1978, has around 10, 541 peacekeepers from 50 countries in Lebanon, monitoring the ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel and ensuring humanitarian access for civilians.

Italy, whose peacekeepers were also affected, lodged a formal protest with Israel. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni spoke with the U. N. mission's commander, expressing Italy's disapproval of the attacks. Italy's defense minister even went so far as to suggest that the attack might constitute a war crime, emphasizing that it was not a mistake. France also joined the chorus of criticism, expressing deep concern and calling for an explanation from Israel. The French Foreign Ministry stressed the importance of protecting peacekeepers and allowing UNIFIL to carry out its mission without hindrance.
