Israeli General's Comments on Gaza Stir Debate

Last week, a high-ranking Israeli general caused a stir with remarks suggesting the Gaza Strip might be fully evacuated. Brigadier General Itzik Cohen told journalists that residents of northern Gaza won't be allowed to return home. Humanitarian experts weighed in, warning this could break international laws against forced displacement and using food as a weapon. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) quickly stepped back from Cohen’s words. They said his comments were taken out of context during a discussion about Jabaliya. The IDF claims they’re not trying to push northern Gaza residents southward. Instead, they blame Hamas for hiding among civilians and aim to combat them.

However, various groups worry that Israel might enforce the "generals' plan, " a strategy involving deadlines for civilians to leave and then treating anyone remaining as a combatant. Despite these allegations, the IDF insists aid is entering northern Gaza towns like Jabaliya, despite contrary reports from residents. Palestinian medics recently reported 17 deaths from Israeli attacks in northern Gaza and Rafah. The IDF stated they’d killed about 50 militants in the same period.
