Is Trump a Real Peacemaker? A Closer Look
Friday, November 1, 2024
During his presidency, Trump often criticized U. S. allies. He threatened to leave NATO and even suggested Russia could do whatever it wants if allies don't pay up. He also questioned support for Ukraine and Taiwan. While allies should contribute more to defense, treating commitments like protection rackets weakens deterrence.
Trump's inconsistency toward rivals and adversaries is also troubling. He swung between tough talk and softening his stance on China. He sided with Russia's President Putin and conditioned aid to Ukraine on political favors. With North Korea, he fluctuated between threats and praise for the dictator. He withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal without a replacement, allowing Iran to advance its nuclear program.
Such inconsistency and ambiguity can't aid deterrence. It makes conflicts more likely. Given his record, it's hard to imagine Trump bringing peace. A second term could unleash his most chaotic instincts.
