The city's slow recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to this shift. Many voters are frustrated with the city's leadership and are looking for change. The ascendant tech class, who have poured money into moderate candidates' campaigns, are also driving this shift. They want to see more punitive measures taken against the city's growing homeless population and rising crime rates. 

Progressivism, once a defining characteristic of San Francisco, is being redefined. Peskin's campaign promises to prioritize low-income housing, expand rent control, and increase shelter capacity for the homeless. However, his opponents argue that his approach is impractical and conservative. 

The question remains: what does it mean to be progressive in San Francisco today? Is it about supporting liberal policies or about being willing to defy convention? The answer lies in the policies, not the label.
