Iranian Ship Sunk Near Sri Lanka: A Ripple in the Indian Ocean

Sri Lanka, GalleThursday, March 5, 2026
A warship from Iran went down after a U. S. submarine struck it off the coast of Sri Lanka, just days after the vessel had joined a naval drill hosted by India. The incident shows how far the U. S. –Israel campaign against Iran has stretched, reaching waters that India watches closely for its own security interests. The Iranian frigate was part of a large exercise in Visakhapatnam, where 74 nations came together for the International Fleet Review and MILAN 2026. Photos posted by the Indian navy on February 17 showed the ship sailing with its flag raised, signaling it was a welcome guest in Indian waters. Shortly after the exercise, the ship set out toward home, passing through international sea lanes in the Indian Ocean. A U. S. submarine fired a torpedo that detonated beneath the vessel, causing it to break apart and sink in less than a minute. Sri Lankan naval forces later found 87 bodies and rescued 32 sailors, taking them to a hospital in Galle.
The U. S. Defense Department released footage of the attack, describing the ship as a “prize” and noting that President Trump had said eliminating Iran’s navy was a key goal. In contrast, Iran’s foreign ministry condemned the act as an atrocity at sea and warned that the United States would regret its actions. India’s government has not yet spoken publicly about the event, sparking criticism from opposition leaders. Rahul Gandhi accused Prime Minister Modi of silence, while former diplomat Kanwal Sibal argued that India bears a moral responsibility because the ship was invited to Indian waters. The incident has ignited debate over how India should respond to threats in its maritime neighborhood. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka announced that another Iranian vessel had entered its exclusive economic zone. The navy is taking over the ship and its crew, with arrangements made after discussions with Iranian officials. This development adds a new layer to the already tense situation in the region.
