iPhone 16: Surging Sales in China, Despite AI Uncertainty

The iPhone 16 is off to a fantastic start, especially in China, where sales have jumped by 20% compared to last year's model. This is great news for Apple, considering the iPhone 15 had a tough time in the world's largest smartphone market. The priciest models, the Pro and Pro Max, are doing even better, with a 44% increase in sales. China has been a tricky market for Apple lately. Competition is fierce, and people are really into AI and foldable phones. Apple's new AI feature, Apple Intelligence, is launching soon but will only be available in US English at first. Other countries can still use AI features if they set their devices to US English, but China and the EU are exceptions.

In China, Apple might need a local partner to power its AI features. Beijing has rules against foreign AI models. Apple hasn't shared much about bringing Apple Intelligence to China, but we know Tim Cook is working with local regulators. Apple plans to support Chinese in 2025.
