Hyde Park's Health Care Struggle: Why Doesn't It Have a Community Health Center?

Hyde Park residents have been fighting for a community health center for years. Without one, they face long bus rides and late appointments. Many in Hyde Park rely on public transportation to get to hospitals, and delays can cause stress and high blood pressure. The neighborhood is a health care desert, with no community health centers to serve its diverse population. Hyde Park once had Carney Hospital, but it closed due to financial troubles. Now, residents depend on a few private physicians and hospitals far away. This lack of local care is a big problem, especially for the many Black and non-English speaking residents who struggle to access health services. Hyde Park has high rates of health issues like infant mortality, heart disease, and diabetes. During the pandemic, it had the most COVID-19 cases in the city.

Local leaders and residents are pushing for a community health center. They say it's urgent and could improve health outcomes. Marcia Kimm-Jackson, leading the effort, thinks Hyde Park deserves better. Community health centers are often started by neighborhood activism and offer affordable care. Massachusetts has many, but Hyde Park isn't one of the lucky ones. Politicians have tried to help, but finding a suitable location and funding have been tough. A proposed site in a community center was deemed unfit, and money allocated for a study was never used. Residents worry that the vision for a health center is getting lost. They want a place that feels like community, not just a clinic. Hyde Park feels like an island, cut off from good health care.
