Huntington Beach Says 'No' to Sanctuary Rules

Huntington Beach, a bustling coastal city in California, has made a big move against the state's immigration policies. The city has passed a resolution to work closely with federal agencies like Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), aiming to tackle migrant crime. This goes against the 2017 law pushed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which prevents local cops from helping federal immigration authorities. "We can't just let criminals go because they're undocumented, " said Council Member Casey McKeon, expressing the city's frustration. Local crime has reportedly gone up since this law, known as the California Values Act or SB 54, was implemented. The city is now stuck between state law and federal rules, fearing punishment from both sides.

City Attorney Michael Gates shared their dilemma, "We're stuck between state law and federal law. We just want to keep our city safe. " Huntington Beach is even suing the state, claiming SB 54 breaks federal laws. The city's stance was strengthened by recent crimes, like the arrest of an undocumented immigrant for starting a fire in Los Angeles. "We're not going to let the state's misguided policies put our citizens at risk, " Gates added.
