How Wind and Frosty Soil Conspire to Disrupt Electricity

In the cold regions of Finland, high winds can wreak havoc on overhead power lines, causing frequent blackouts. Researchers have been studying the link between wind speed and soil frost to better understand these disruptions. By collecting data from five regions between 2008 and 2018, they've discovered that not only is there a strong connection between wind speed and power outages, but also that frosty soil makes the problem worse.

Thanks to multivariate linear regression models, it's clear that wind speed and soil frost are closely tied to the number of interruptions. On average, the correlation with wind gusts alone is about 0. 67, but when considering frosty soil, this number jumps to 0. 72. Thus, accounting for frosty soil is crucial for accurately predicting power outages in the Nordic climate.
