How Sludge Biochar Boosts Alkaline Soil Health

Researchers ran a field test for 180 days, focusing on how anaerobic digested sludge biochar (ADBC) affects alkaline soil. They checked soil properties, nutrient levels, microbial life, and toxicity risks. The results? ADBC made the soil better in several ways. The soil's pH dropped from 8. 24 to 7. 5, and its conductivity shot up from 56. 7 to 249. 0 microseconds per centimeter.

Total organic carbon went from 13. 5 to 19. 9 grams per kilogram, available nitrogen from 45. 5 to 237. 5 grams per kilogram, and available phosphorus from 549. 5 to 1396. 7 grams per kilogram. Plus, it increased the number of helpful bacteria, like Proteobacteria and Actinobacteriota. But here’s the kicker: the higher the preparation temperature and particle size, the less toxic the soil became. So, ADBC could be a game-changer for improving alkaline and nutrient-poor soils, making them more productive overall.
