How Skin Conditions Affect Daily Life: A Look at Quality of Life from Patients' Perspectives

Imagine you're living with a skin condition like atopic dermatitis, hidradenitis suppurativa, pemphigus, or psoriasis. How does it affect your daily life? Researchers recently explored this question by comparing how patients with these conditions rate their health-related quality of life (HRQoL). They looked at data from outpatients collected between 2015 and 2021. The study used three different methods to measure HRQoL: time trade-off (TTO), EQ-5D-5L, and Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI). Each method asks patients about their daily life, health, and how their skin condition affects them. The researchers wanted to see if these methods gave similar results.

Most patients were around 41 years old, and more than half were men. When they looked at the average scores across all methods, they found that patients rated their quality of life highest with TTO (0. 83), followed by EQ-5D-5L (0. 81), and lowest with mDLQI (0. 77). Interestingly, only the TTO and EQ-5D-5L methods showed similar results. The severity of the skin condition affected all the ratings, but only TTO showed differences between the types of skin conditions. This means that the DLQI method might not be the best for comparing quality of life between different skin conditions.
