The study, conducted between June and August 2021, looked at people's tendency to prefer immediate smaller rewards over larger future ones, a trait known as delay discounting. They also checked vaccination status, basic info like age and education, and how stressed people were.

Over a year later, 2, 547 vaccinated participants were asked if they'd get a booster and why. After considering things like age and stress levels, researchers found that those who preferred immediate rewards were less likely to want a booster. Protection against COVID-19 was the top reason for wanting a booster, while many who didn't want one saw it as unnecessary. This study shows that how we value future rewards can influence our decisions about vaccine boosters. It could help design better ways to encourage more people to get boosters, like emphasizing the importance of science or even making vaccines mandatory.
