How Genes Affect Reproduction: The Good and the Bad

To understand how our genetic makeup influences reproduction, we need to look at many factors. Recent times have seen changes like earlier teenage periods and having babies later in life. As these changes happen, genes might play a bigger role. But it's tricky because social and economic factors can mix up genetic effects. Scientists have been trying to figure this out with a big study called the Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWASs). They've been looking at 44 different traits in both women and men, like how often people have kids, the lifespan of their reproductive years, problems with getting pregnant, and hormone levels.

From 2007 to early 2024, researchers found 37 genes that affect many reproductive traits. Some are linked to rare genetic disorders. For example, genes like FSHB and WNT4. They also found that these genetic traits can affect other health issues and how long people live. But it's not just about us! Parents' age can also affect their kids. Plus, scientists are still discovering new things and figuring out the puzzles in this field.
