How Faith From Home Helps Newcomers Thrive

Religion and spirituality are often key players in helping immigrants bounce back from tough times. But many studies focus on how immigrants connect with religious groups in their new homes. They often miss out on how the religious beliefs and practices from their home countries shape their experiences in a new land. This study zoomed in on Sri Lankan immigrants living in Italy. It aimed to understand how their home country religious beliefs and practices influence their happiness and overall well-being in a new social setting. The study found two big themes. First, religious practices might seem less important right after moving to a new country. But when things get uncertain, these practices become crucial. They provide a sense of psychological stability, boosting both the practical and emotional sides of well-being. Immigrants who stay connected to their home country religious institutions and spiritual values often report higher levels of happiness. Second, religion acts as a cultural bridge. It helps immigrants carry familiar traditions and practices into their new environment. This process of reconnecting with home country religious practices and spirituality helps immigrants navigate their new country. It allows them to balance practical well-being with preserving their cultural identities. Ultimately, this enhances their overall happiness and sense of fulfillment.

The study highlights the importance of recognizing and supporting the role of home country religious practices in the lives of immigrants. It shows that these practices are not just about faith, but also about cultural identity and resilience. Immigrants face a lot of challenges. They have to adapt to a new culture, learn a new language, and often deal with discrimination. But their religious beliefs and practices from home can be a powerful tool for coping with these challenges. They provide a sense of continuity and stability in an otherwise uncertain world. It is important to note that this study focused on Sri Lankan immigrants in Italy. The experiences of immigrants from other countries or in other host countries might be different. However, the findings suggest that home country religious practices can play a significant role in the well-being of immigrants, regardless of their origin or destination. This study also raises questions about how host countries can support immigrants in maintaining their religious and cultural practices. Policies that recognize and respect the diversity of immigrants religious and cultural backgrounds can help promote their well-being and integration.
