How Biodiversity Balances with Resources

Scientists have long tried to explain why some places have more species than others. They've used many different explanations and theories, but these aren't always helpful on a large scale. A new idea, called the Equilibrium Theory of Biodiversity Dynamics (ETBD), is trying to fix this. ETBD suggests that the number of species and how many there are in a community balance out over big areas. This happens because the size of a group affects how often new species appear or old ones disappear, which is influenced by available resources and how many species there are. Unlike other theories, ETBD considers how biodiversity affects community size. It shows how different states can happen, like when one type of environment supports more species than another.

Using data from around the world, scientists tested this theory with trees. They found that ETBD helps explain big patterns in biodiversity, like why there are more types of trees near the equator. This theory could help us understand why some places have more life forms than others, and how resources play a role in this.
