Houston's Fight Against Gun Violence: A Closer Look
Gun violence remains a significant issue in the United States, leading to numerous injuries and fatalities. To address this pressing concern, a program known as the Houston Hospital-Based Violence Intervention Program (Houston-HVIP) is currently being tested.
Program Overview
The initiative is being piloted at a major trauma center in Houston. It targets 274 individuals aged 16 to 35 who have been victims of gun violence. Participants will be divided into two groups:
- Intensive Support Group: Receives comprehensive support and direct referrals to social services for six months.
- Control Group: Receives standard care, which is less intensive.
Program Goals and Measurements
The primary objective is to reduce the likelihood of re-exposure to gun violence. Success will be measured through:
- Self-reports
- Hospital records
- Mortality data
Additionally, the program will track:
- Attitudes toward violence
- Post-traumatic stress

Assessment and Feedback
Participants will be assessed at multiple intervals:
- At the start of the program
- At 3, 6, 9, and 12 months
