Hospital Prices in Alabama: Are They Really Transparent?
Alabama hospitals face a growing push to show how much they charge patients. The federal government has set rules, but it is unclear if all hospitals follow them.
Researchers examined 124 Alabama hospitals listed on the state’s health website. They removed psychiatric and VA centers, leaving 106 hospitals for study. The goal was to see how many offered clear price information online.
Hospitals were split into two groups: those that met the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) rules and those that did not. The study checked each hospital’s website for a pricing tool that shows costs to patients, especially those who might pay out of pocket.
The findings revealed a mixed picture. Some hospitals proudly displayed their rates, while others had confusing or incomplete information. Even in places that perform spinal surgeries—a specialty that can be very expensive—many did not provide easy access to pricing.
Cash‑discount programs were also part of the review. These are deals where patients who pay cash get a lower price. The researchers looked for evidence of such discounts on each hospital’s site.
Overall, the study highlights gaps in transparency. Patients need clear, simple numbers to make informed choices about where to receive care. Without it, they may be surprised by bills or choose a less suitable facility.
The study suggests that Alabama hospitals should improve their online price listings. Doing so would help patients compare costs and avoid hidden fees.
