Hospital Attack in Sudan: The Fight for Darfur

In the heart of Sudan's North Darfur state, a tragic event unfolded. A drone strike hit the last functioning hospital in the capital, El Fasher, killing at least 70 people. This hospital, known as the Saudi Teaching Maternal Hospital, was filled with patients seeking care when the attack happened. Many of the victims were women and children. This attack is just one piece of the larger puzzle of Sudan's civil war, which has been raging for over a year and a half. The war is a power struggle between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF). These groups, led by powerful generals, have caused a major humanitarian crisis. Over 20, 000 people have died, and more than 11 million have been displaced.

The hospital attack is not an isolated incident. Last month, a market in Kabkabiya was bombed, killing over 100 people. Both sides in the conflict accuse each other of carrying out drone attacks on civilian areas. The governor of Darfur, Mini Minnawi, and Sudan's foreign ministry blamed the RSF for the hospital attack. This is a significant incident as El Fasher is one of the last major towns in Darfur not controlled by the RSF. The hospital was a crucial place for medical care, and its loss will make life even harder for those in the region. The World Health Organization's director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, called for the warring parties to stop fighting and leave healthcare facilities alone. He stressed that peace is the best medicine for Sudan's people.
