Higher Education: The Rise of Ideological Echo Chambers and Its Impact on Students

Trust in universities is dropping fast. According to Gallup, only 36% of people trusted higher education in 2023, compared to 57% in 2015. This drop is particularly noticeable among Republicans and independents. Enrollments are also falling, from about 18.1 million students in 2010 to around 15.4 million in 2021. Many factors contribute to this decline, including lower birth rates and economic struggles. However, a growing concern is the perception of colleges as places where only certain views are welcome. Some students might feel uncomfortable self-censoring or having their values rejected by professors. Surveys show that many academic departments lack Republican, conservative, or even single dissenting voices among faculty members. The focus in some schools has shifted towards activism degrees, while traditional subjects like math and classics are sometimes seen as symbols of white privilege. This creates an echo chamber where opposing views struggle to be heard. Similar trends can be seen in journalism, with reporters often rejecting objectivity in favor of advocacy journalism.

As a result, trust in media is also at record lows. People are turning to alternative news sources like blogs. In academia, projects like the Catherine Project offer ideologically unbiased discussions of classic works and are gaining popularity. Some university administrators seem content to maintain these echo chambers, even as students and families look for alternatives. For instance, Columbia University's interim president apologized to protesters who took over a building, not the Jewish professor blocked from campus due to potential anti-Semitic reactions. As ideology dominates and courage wanes, our institutions might face a death spiral. Those with tenure may ride out the decline while enjoying academic acclaim, but it's hard to be a social warrior if nobody is listening.
