Hidden Maya City Found: What Else is Out There?

But even with all that exploring, there’s still so much we don’t know. A new study just unveiled a fascinating discovery: an entire Maya city hidden in Mexico’s Campeche region. This city, named Valeriana, was found using a tech tool called lidar that basically reads the landscape like a massive scanner. The lidar scan showed over 6, 500 ancient structures, including pyramids and ball courts! What’s even more exciting is that Valeriana was right under our noses, near a highway and a town where locals have been farming amidst the ruins for a long time. This find shows that the Maya civilization might be hiding many more secrets.

“This discovery is like finding a hidden treasure, ” said Luke Auld-Thomas, a researcher from Tulane University. “It’s not just about the city itself, but about the countless other structures and settlements that could still be out there, waiting to be discovered. ”
