Hidden Dangers in Your Makeup Bag
The beauty industry is full of surprises, and not all of them are good.
A Startling Discovery
A recent report has shed light on the widespread use of "forever chemicals" in cosmetics and skincare products. These chemicals, known as PFAS, are man-made and don't break down easily. They can build up in our bodies and the environment.
The report found that 51 different PFAS chemicals are used in 1,744 cosmetic formulations.
Why Are They So Popular?
Manufacturers love them because they:
- Make products waterproof
- Make products last longer
- Improve the feel of products
The Catch
The FDA doesn't have enough data to say for sure if they are safe. Out of the 25 most commonly used PFAS, only five were deemed low risk. One was flagged for potential health risks, and the rest? The jury is still out.
What's Being Done?
The FDA is concerned about the lack of reliable data. They are working with the CDC and EPA to:
- Update recommendations
- Monitor these chemicals more closely
The Reality
There are no federal laws specifically banning PFAS in cosmetics.
What Can You Do?
- Stay informed
- Keep an eye out for updates from the FDA
