Heat Wave Forces Schools to Cut Days
New Jersey, USAWednesday, May 20, 2026
The districts that have decided to change their schedules include Garfield in Bergen County, Winslow Township in Camden County, Hamilton Township in Mercer County, Scotch Plains‑Fanwood in Union County (but only for kindergarten through eighth grade), and Union Township, also in Union County.
Parents are being asked to plan for shorter school days and to keep their children hydrated. The changes aim to reduce the risk of heat‑related illnesses among students and staff.
Officials say that when temperatures rise, it’s best to cut down on the time spent in classrooms and buses. The early dismissals are a simple yet effective measure to protect health while the heat wave continues.
