Heat, Hail and the Fourth: A Day of Storms

New York, NY, City, USASaturday, July 4, 2026
A thunderstorm rolled through the New York area last night, ripping down trees and snapping power lines. The event left hundreds of thousands without electricity as the storm tore through the region, especially in Morris and Monmouth Counties. In Queens, a sudden surge on an underground cable caused Con Edison to cut power for nearly 10, 000 customers. The storm even damaged the grandstands on Governor’s Island, canceling access for those with premium tickets to see the historic Sail Parade.
Now a heat wave is looming. Temperatures are expected to climb close to 100 degrees today, triggering an extreme heat warning that will last until the evening. Despite the hot day, relief is on its way as cooler air should arrive tonight and drop temperatures to about 74 degrees. However, that same cooling could bring more storms just in time for the Fourth‑of‑July fireworks. Rain is predicted to begin around 7 p. m. , lasting until about 11 p. m. , right before the Macy’s fireworks launch at 9:25 p. m. The weather is set to stay mild into the weekend. Sunday’s high will be around 84 degrees with scattered showers, and Monday will bring a cooler day at 75 degrees and more rain.
