Germany's Coalition Crumbles: Early Elections Ahead
GermanyMonday, December 16, 2024
Scholz had warned that politics isn't a game but about investing in the country. However, his coalition has struggled to agree on how to do that. Andrea Römmele, a politics professor, dubbed the three-party coalition a failed project despite its bold start.
France isn't the only country facing political unrest. The looming return of former US President Donald Trump, who’s threatened tariffs and a Ukraine deal, adds to the uncertainty. Scholz's government, the first of its kind in postwar Germany, had aimed to drive a green industrial revolution. But Russia's invasion of Ukraine changed everything, forcing Germany to rethink its energy and defense policies.
The constitutional court's decision to invalidate the coalition's budget worsened the situation. It left a €60bn gap in public finances and sparked feuding between the coalition partners. Guntram Wolff of the think-tank Bruegel believes Germany needs a new strategic plan, as the old model reliant on cheap Russian gas and US security is no longer viable.
