German Army Looks to AI for Faster Battle Decisions

Berlin, GermanyWednesday, March 25, 2026

The German army is piloting artificial intelligence systems capable of sifting through battlefield data faster than human analysts, according to its chief commander.

During recent visits to Ukraine, the commander observed how drones and advanced sensors generate enormous amounts of data. He explained that Ukrainian forces have used this data—collected over four years of conflict—to train AI models that predict enemy actions and suggest responses.

“Many tasks currently requiring large teams and long periods could be completed more quickly with AI support,” the German leader said, emphasizing that the machine would only advise, leaving final decisions to human soldiers.

The army plans to blend Ukrainian experience with its own training exercises to develop AI tools that fit Germany’s operational rules. While no specific product has been chosen yet, the commander stressed that deploying such technology is urgent.

He noted that European-made systems are possible but American solutions might provide faster, proven deployment. For example, U.S. forces already use a platform called Maven from Palantir to process images and video for quicker situational awareness.
