Israel is currently engaged in a complex operation to recover the remains of hostages from Gaza. This week, another body, believed to be that of a deceased hostage, was handed over to Israel by Hamas through the Red Cross. This marks the third such transfer this week. The remains are now at a national forensics lab for identification. If confirmed, this would mean that six more hostage remains are still in Gaza.

Recent Developments

Earlier, the body of Itay Chen, the last Israeli-American citizen held in Gaza, was returned to Israel. Before that, the remains of three other hostages, including Omer Neutra, were also handed over. Israel has also gathered new intelligence on the location of the longest-held remains. Sources say these remains are likely in Rafah, southern Gaza, near an area where up to 200 Hamas militants are hiding in underground tunnels.

However, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have clarified that they do not have information confirming that the remains are inside the tunnel with the militants. Israel is considering an Egyptian proposal that would allow safe passage for these militants to Hamas-held territory. But Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has not made a decision yet. He has publicly acknowledged the presence of these militant cells and stated that they are being systematically eliminated.

The Longest-Held Remains

Lt. Hadar Goldin, whose remains are the longest held, was killed in the 2014 war between Israel and Hamas. His brother has expressed strong opposition to any concessions that would allow the militants safe passage until all hostages are returned. This situation highlights the delicate balance between military operations and diplomatic efforts in the ongoing conflict.
