Freeing a Sea Lion from the Grip of Entanglement
Northern Vancouver Island, CanadaMonday, September 23, 2024
Using a specialized technique developed by the rescue society, the team sedated the sea lion and carefully cut away the entangling strap. After a few minutes of gentle manipulation, the sea lion was finally free, its neck no longer constricted by the pack strap. With the entanglement gone, the sea lion was administered a second dose of medication to wake it up. And with a flick of its fin, it swam away, its freedom restored.
The rescue effort was a collaborative effort, with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and the Marine Education and Research Society both lending a hand. For Dr. Haulena and his team, it was a triumphant moment, knowing that their specialized technique had saved yet another sea lion from a life-threatening situation.
