Free at Last: A Soldier's Journey Home
North KoreaSaturday, September 21, 2024
King's journey began when he was released from the South Korean prison, where he had served nearly two months for assault charges. Military officers took him to the airport to return to Fort Bliss, but instead of getting on the plane, he joined a civilian tour of the Korean border village of Panmunjom. It was there that he made his bold move, running across the heavily fortified border into North Korea.
King spent 71 days in North Korean custody before being released and flown back to Texas. His story raises questions about the motivations behind his actions and the consequences of his desertion. Despite the challenges he faced, King is now free to return home and start anew.
