Former President Trump’s Call for Impeachment

On Saturday, former U.S. President Donald Trump took to Truth Social to demand the impeachment of Vice President Kamala Harris after her visit to the U.S.-Mexico border. During her trip to Douglas, Arizona, Harris criticized Trump’s handling of immigration, stating that it's possible to secure the border while also creating a fair and humane system. Trump responded by misrepresenting statistics about convicted immigrants and crime. He claimed that 14,000 murderers had been allowed into the country without proper vetting or checks. However, these numbers include individuals who entered under his own administration as well.

The former president’s statement was challenged by fact-checkers. CNN pointed out that the figures refer to noncitizens convicted of crimes and living in the U.S., regardless of when they entered. Many of these individuals are serving their sentences or awaiting deportation, which isn't possible due to restrictions from their home countries. A spokesperson for Homeland Security clarified that the data spans decades and includes people whose custody decisions were made long before the current administration. This highlights the complexity of immigration issues and the need for accurate information when discussing them.
