Forest Service's Budget Crunch Leaves Seasonal Workers in Limbo
USA, GunnisonTuesday, October 8, 2024
Many seasonal workers are vital for their institutional and ecological knowledge. They often take on responsibilities above their pay grade, such as monitoring rare plant species. With the hiring freeze, important ecological work could be compromised. The agency plans to scale back services rather than demand more from its reduced workforce. However, some tasks can't be set aside easily, like maintaining visitor centers and trails.
The Forest Service has attempted to reduce reliance on seasonal workers by converting some to permanent status. However, these new permanent seasonal roles will also feel the budget cutbacks. Extending terms and promised promotions are on hold, and external hiring offers might be rescinded. Organizations that partner with the Forest Service, like the Northwest Avalanche Center, are also worried about the impact of these cutbacks.
