Foreign Language Majors' Training and Entrepreneurial Dreams

Imagine you're a student learning a foreign language. You've had hands-on experience in innovation and entrepreneurship training. Does this help you think about starting your own business? Researchers took a group of students studying foreign languages and looked at their experiences in special programs meant to teach them about innovation and entrepreneurship. They wanted to know if being good at their studies made them more likely to want to start their own businesses. They used a model called the Theory of Planned Behavior to examine how different factors like attitude towards entrepreneurship, feeling in control, and what friends and family think affect your desire to start a business. They collected data through questionnaires and used a method called Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) to test their ideas.

The results? Feeling in control and having a positive attitude about entrepreneurship were big factors in wanting to start a business. Surprisingly, what friends and family thought didn't matter as much. Being part of these special training programs also had a direct impact on how much control you feel over starting a business. And the better you are at your studies, like feeling confident in a foreign language or being smart about other cultures, the more you benefit from these programs. All these factors together can explain more than half of why you might want to start your own business.
