Firefighters’ Sleep Trouble: Early Findings from Portugal’s New Study

PortugalMonday, March 23, 2026

Portugal’s firefighting crews, who often work odd hours and stay awake for long stretches, are showing worrying signs of sleep problems. A national research project collected data from more than 1,800 active firemen and women to see how common sleepiness and breathing pauses during sleep are in this group.

Methodology

  • Online Survey
Participants answered questions on age, gender, weight, health history, and daily habits.
  • Screening Questionnaires
Two short tools flagged daytime sleepiness and possible breathing problems.

Key Findings

Metric Result
Daytime sleepiness Over 1/3 report feeling very sleepy
Obstructive Sleep Apnea risk ~20% at high risk
Overweight/Obesity Nearly 2/3 of respondents
Heart problems ~20%
Mental health issues ~25%

Implications & Next Steps

These numbers suggest a serious burden of sleep disorders among Portuguese firefighters, driven by the demands of their work. The research team plans to follow these individuals over time to assess how treatment affects health and job performance.
