Fire Danger: Schools in LA Close Again

Multiple wildfires burning around Los Angeles have forced many schools to extend their closures. Nearly two dozen districts are affected, leaving over 700, 000 students without classes. Some districts initially tried to reopen but had to close again due to poor air quality. Many of these closures are due to staffing issues, as employees have been displaced by the fires. Several districts, including Los Angeles Unified, are closed through Friday.

Each district has its unique challenges. Some are dealing with power outages or lack of essential services. Others have staff members who are still evacuated or taking care of relatives. Despite these challenges, districts like Glendora Unified are set to reopen on Friday, with power and internet access restored. Some districts, like Glendale Unified, have offered tips to help families cope with the fires and stay safe. LAUSD is providing academic support through their Continuity of Learning plan. They are also distributing meals to students and offering mental health resources. The fires have caused significant damage to some schools, with two charter schools destroyed.
