Finding Purpose in Later Years: A Look at Elderly Life in Care Homes

As people age, their health, social roles, and sense of self often change. Research shows that having a sense of purpose can lead to better health and happiness. This study looked at elderly people living in care homes in Romania. It found that religion and spirituality were very important to them. Many saw life as a gift and found comfort in prayer and going to church. Passing down values to younger family members was also meaningful. It gave them a sense of leaving a lasting impact. Strong relationships with family and friends made them feel connected, while loneliness had the opposite effect. Daily goals, like keeping routines or looking forward to visits, gave them a sense of purpose.

The study also found that religion and spirituality are related but different. Organized religion provided a sense of community, while personal spiritual experiences, like connecting with nature, were important for those not deeply involved in formal religion. This research shows how cultural background, like Orthodox Christian traditions, shapes how elderly people in Romania find meaning in life. It suggests that care homes could offer activities that focus on spirituality, building relationships, and letting elders share their wisdom with younger generations. This could help improve their well-being and sense of purpose.
