Fighting COVID-19: A Look at Ivermectin and Nitazoxanide in Mexico

You've heard about using different drugs to fight COVID-19, right? Well, let's chat about a study done in Mexico City that checked out ivermectin and nitazoxanide. This study looked at both people getting treated at home and those in the hospital. Out of 228 people getting treated at home, some got ivermectin, some got nitazoxanide, and others got both. Those who got ivermectin late – after five days of having symptoms – had the best results in regards to testing negative for the virus. The same was seen with those who got nitazoxanide late and those who got both drugs at any time.

Now, let's talk about the 179 people who were in the hospital. Their blood test results showed changes in several important factors, like neutrophils, lymphocytes, ferritin, and D-dimer levels. These levels went up, while C-reactive protein and fibrinogen levels went down. That's a good sign! Plus, only a small number needed mechanical ventilation, and just 5% sadly passed away during their hospital stay. So, what's the big takeaway? Even though this study has its limits, it looks like ivermectin and nitazoxanide could be helpful in lowering the virus, reducing the need for ventilation, and cutting down on inflammation and blood clotting, which can save lives.
