Fenerbahce's Leader in Hot Water: What's the Deal?
In a surprising turn of events, the head of Fenerbahce, a big name in Turkish sports, was held in Istanbul on Wednesday. This comes as part of a bigger drug probe that's been making waves, involving well-known figures from entertainment and media.
Sadettin Saran, who holds both Turkish and U.S. citizenship, was detained after tests found drug traces in his hair. This happened just after he was called in last week to talk to prosecutors and give hair and blood samples.
Widespread Investigation
Since December, over a dozen people have been caught up in this investigation. These include:
- TV hosts
- Journalists
- Singers
- Actors
- Social media stars
They're facing serious charges like:
- Drug production
- Trafficking
- Helping with prostitution
Many of them have gone through drug tests too.
Saran's Background and Response
Saran, who was born in Denver and became Fenerbahce's chairman in September, was questioned last week about possibly supplying and helping with drug use.
Fenerbahce's Response:
- They back Saran
- Club's work won't stop
- They trust Saran to handle this with his usual strength and good sense
But Saran isn't taking the test results lying down. He said he never used the drug in question and wants another test done.
Fenerbahce's History of Controversy
Fenerbahce is no stranger to trouble. Their former president, Aziz Yildirim, spent time in jail in 2012 for match-fixing, but was later cleared when it was found the case was messed up by corruption.
Now, the club is also dealing with another investigation into illegal betting and match-fixing in Turkish soccer.
