Fending Off Fungus-Farming Beetles: Ethanol vs. Flood Stress

They used eight different tree species, grown in containers, to observe beetle behavior. Their goal? To see if any specific beetle species preferred ethanol over flood stress and whether the tree species mattered.

To understand this, they analyzed the amount of ethanol in trees to see if it matched the beetle's preferences. The results were clear: ethanol-injected trees attracted and housed more beetles than their flood-stressed counterparts. Surprisingly, ethanol injections drew beetles to a variety of deciduous trees, making the species of tree less critical.
