FedEx's LTL Spin-Off: A Shift Towards Specialization

Back in the 90s, FedEx jumped into the LTL business by acquiring Viking Freight and American Freightways. The idea was to offer a full package of shipping options, from small parcels to large truckloads. This strategy was similar to its rival, UPS. However, as the years passed and the shipping world changed, with e-commerce booming and supply chains getting more complex, this approach didn't seem as useful. Other companies, like Old Dominion and XPO, were doing well by focusing just on LTL.

So, FedEx decided to spin off its LTL unit, FedEx Freight, into a separate company. This allows FedEx to focus on its core business — parcel and express delivery — while FedEx Freight can grow independently. Many customers these days prefer to use specialists for different types of shipping, so this move makes sense. It's a sign that the industry is moving away from being everything to everyone and towards focusing on what they do best.
