Falcons Eye Veteran Linebacker to Fix Run Defense

ATLANTA, USAThursday, April 2, 2026

The Atlanta Falcons still lack a solid inside linebacker after Kaden Elliss left for the Saints, and analysts say they can address this gap before next season.

A recent perspective lists the Falcons as one of six teams that could snag former All‑Pro Bobby Wagner, a 36‑year‑old linebacker known for his run‑stopping ability.

Wagner finished his 14th NFL season last fall with impressive numbers: 162 combined tackles, eight tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. He has earned about $118 million over his career, according to Spotrac.

Despite missing a Pro‑Bowl nod for the first time in 12 years, Wagner remains highly regarded. Pro Football Focus ranked him among the top five linebackers who played at least 80 % of their team’s snaps. His durability is notable; he has never missed a game since age 30 and has played in 219 contests, including a Super Bowl win.

The Falcons’ run defense struggled last season, allowing the ninth‑most yards in the league and 4.6 yards per play. Elliss led the team with 107 tackles, but his departure leaves a void that the new signing could fill.

The team already added Christian Harris and Channing Tindall in free agency, yet those players do not match Wagner’s experience or impact. A veteran presence could also help younger teammates adjust to the defensive scheme.

Other free‑agent targets have been suggested, such as Logan Wilson, but Wagner’s track record and proven ability to stop the run make him a compelling choice. If money is not an issue, the Falcons could benefit from his leadership and tackling prowess to strengthen their defense before the 2026 draft.
