Exploring ASHAs' Knowledge: A Deep Dive into India's Health Workers

In 2005, India introduced the Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) program to improve health outcomes, especially focusing on reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health (RMNCH+A). Over time, their responsibilities expanded to include communicable and non-communicable diseases, oral health, and eye care. However, there's a gap in understanding how these frontline workers' knowledge levels vary across different health domains. This study aims to fill that void by examining research from 2005 to 2022. By doing so, we can gain insights into what influences their knowledge and how their expertise has evolved over the years.

ASHAs play a critical role in communities, acting as a bridge between healthcare services and the people who need them. Yet, their deep understanding of various health issues isn't well-documented. To address this, the study looked at numerous primary studies to identify patterns and factors affecting ASHAs' knowledge. This comprehensive approach helps in painting a clearer picture of the strengths and areas for improvement in their training and support systems. Another key aspect explored is the difference in knowledge levels across various health domains. RMNCH+A has been a long-standing focus, but how do ASHAs fare when it comes to understanding and managing other health concerns? This understanding is crucial for tailoring future training programs effectively. By synthesizing evidence, the study offers valuable recommendations for policymakers and health practitioners to enhance ASHAs' capabilities further.
