Elon Musk, the billionaire behind SpaceX, Tesla, and X (formerly Twitter), has had a rocky relationship with free speech since taking over the social media platform in 2022.

Musk's journey with X began with a promise to rescue it from what he saw as left-wing censorship. He envisioned a "common digital town square, " but the reality has been different.

European Parliament member Branko Grims, however, suggested giving Musk the Nobel Peace Prize. His reason? Musk's supposed support for freedom of speech.

But Musk's actions on X tell a different story. Under Musk's leadership, X has censored speech and distorted the open exchange of ideas despite his claims.

Musk's takeover was partly motivated by Twitter's previous censorship of the New York Post's reporting on Hunter Biden's laptop. Twitter initially blocked the story, suspecting it contained "hacked materials, " before uncensoring it a day later and reinstating the account two weeks after that.

Musk criticized this as "free speech suppression, " but X has also censored journalism under dubious standards.

In September 2024, journalist Ken Klippenstein published the Trump campaign's vetting dossier on JD Vance, but X blocked the link and banned him for "doxxing. " This was despite the fact that the document contained private information, which Klippenstein later redacted.

After The New York Times revealed that the story was tanked after Trump's campaign "connected" with X, Musk saw the light and revoked the ban.

This isn't the only time X's anti-"doxxing" policy has stifled journalism. X banned ElonJet, an account that shared publicly accessible information about Musk's jet's real-time whereabouts, violating his previous pledge not to remove it.
