The billionaire Elon Musk has taken on a unique role within the government. His title is 'special government employee. ' This means he is not a full-time worker, neither is he a volunteer. He has a specific time commitment to the government, with a limit of 130 days in a single year and no pay.  Musk already has the highest level of security access, a top secret clearance. This designation allows Musk to work closely with the White House, having his own office on the White House campus. He is working on an initiative to make the government more efficient.

         Musk's business deals with the government have been significant. Musk's business, SpaceX, has received billions from the government in the form of direct contracts.

         Could there be potential conflicts of interest with Musk's government role and his private business?  Musk is subject to federal conflict-of-interest laws. These laws prevent him from participating in matters that could personally benefit him financially. Critics question whether the Justice Department will thoroughly enforce these laws, given Musk's affiliation with the administration.

         Musk’s involvement in government matters extends into other businesses. Musk's satellite internet service, Starlink, lost a contract with the Canadian province of Ontario after Trump announced a tariff on Canada.
