Election Security: Kansas City Tightens Polling Place Protections

Election Day is just around the corner, and Kansas City is ensuring that voters feel safe. Over the past few years, election officials have faced threats and harassment. Shawn Kieffer, a director with the Kansas City Board of Election Commissioners, recalls an incident earlier this year where a voter became aggressive and made workers feel unsafe. This led to the Kansas City Council passing a law in July to protect election officials from threats and violence near polling places. To enhance safety for the upcoming election, the election board has hired security guards. These guards will be present at many polling stations and will even escort voters to their cars if needed. The board has also worked with city officials and the FBI to develop safety protocols, but specific details are being kept confidential for security reasons.

This increased focus on security isn't just happening in Kansas City. Randy Sutton, a retired police lieutenant, explains that many polling locations, such as schools and churches, are considered vulnerable targets. Law enforcement agencies across the country are taking extra precautions, including using video surveillance and drones. In Maricopa County, Arizona, they've gone as far as purchasing ballistic vests to protect election officials. There are even rumors about the military getting involved, though these remain unconfirmed.
