Eerie Trees Take Over North Carolina: The Spread of Saltwater Ghost Forests

Ever wondered what happens when trees meet too much salt? In North Carolina, NASA satellites have snapped pictures showing the eerie spread of what scientists call "ghost forests. " Over the past two decades, trees along the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge have been losing their lives, stood bald and lifeless, like ghosts haunting the land. These ghost forests form when groups of trees succumb to saltwater, a common occurrence near coasts. Freshwater-loving trees like the bald cypress get overwhelmed by saltwater invasions, leading to their slow death. Between 2005 and 2024, NASA's Landsat satellites caught this chilling transformation. Approximately 11% of the refuge's land has transitioned from lush green to spooky brown and black.

The issue is being made worse by the gradual sea-level rise. In the area where the images were taken, the sea levels are going up by about 0. 15 inches each year, which is surprisingly fast. Emily Bernhardt, an ecologist from Duke University, explained that this squeeze between rising water and coastal development further stresses these wetland forests. But the story is not just about climate change. A major die-off in 2011 was blamed on a drought and Hurricane Irene, showing that weather events also play a significant role. From Massachusetts to the Carolinas, ghost forests are becoming more common. With recent storms hitting the southeast, there's a chance we'll see even more of these spectral sights.
