Drone Battalion's Struggle: A Glimpse into Ukraine's War Effort

The Achilles drone battalion, part of Kyiv's 92nd Assault Brigade, uses around 3, 000 first-person view drones each month. However, they're not choosing high-tech Western drones. Why? Because they don't work well in Ukraine's war conditions. Rustam Nurgudin, the battalion's executive officer, said this at a recent defense industry briefing in London. He pointed out that even advanced systems like GPS-guided Excalibur artillery shells aren't effective. Ukraine's drone industry is booming. The country produces millions of drones annually. But funding is a big issue. There are over 250 companies involved, but they don't have enough money. Oleksandr Kamyshin, a presidential adviser, said it's frustrating to have the capability but not enough resources.

Electronic warfare is another challenge. It can disrupt navigation systems on drones. Western donations help, but many of these drones aren't suitable for Ukraine's ever-changing battlefields. They're either too expensive or can't handle the dense electronic warfare. Nurgudin thinks Western militaries don't understand modern warfare. They're still influenced by wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. The Achilles battalion has fought in Kharkiv, Bakhmut, and Kupiansk. The front lines in Kharkiv have been static for two years, but there's been a recent push from Russia. The situation in Kupiansk is uncertain. It depends on Ukraine's stock of shells, anti-aircraft systems, and the number of fighters. There's also the unknown factor of potential North Korean troops.
