Diversity Matters: Lessons from a Diverse Administration
Ibadan, NigeriaSaturday, January 4, 2025
Biden promised an administration that mirrored America's diversity, and he delivered. His cabinet was a first in many ways. Half of those appointed were people of color, including the first Black Defense Secretary, Lloyd Austin; the first female Treasury Secretary, Janet Yellen; the first Native American cabinet member, Deb Haaland; and the first openly gay, Senate-confirmed cabinet member, Pete Buttigieg.
But as a new administration takes over, one that's pledged to reverse diversity initiatives, we must ask: Are we ready to let go of the benefits that come with diverse perspectives? The story of Wally Adeyemo serves as a reminder of the value that diversity brings to policy-making. It challenges us to think critically about what we're losing as we move forward.
