Discovering Native American Heritage at HREI

Want to explore the rich history of local tribes? The Human Rights Education Institute is throwing a special event called "Native American Heritage Day"! From 10 a. m. to 2 p. m. on Tuesday, you can dive into activities, crafts, and stories that celebrate the heritage of the indigenous people. Feeling hungry? Learn how to cook up some authentic fry bread and make your own Indian tacos. If crafts are more your thing, students from North Idaho College's Indigenous Studies program will be there to teach you bead crafts.

Curious about native foods and local traditions? You can learn all about Water Potato Day and why the Coeur d'Alene Tribe is so important to the stewardship of Lake Coeur d’Alene. Need a break? Watch "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron" and "Spirit Untamed" movies while munching on popcorn and enjoying light refreshments. The Human Rights Education Institute wants to honor the indigenous people, like the Schitsu’umsh, Coeur d’Alene Tribe, who have been here all along. They're shedding light on their ancient heritage and the land where the Institute stands. All this fun is happening at 414 West Fort Grounds Drive.
