Democratic States Sue Trump Over Birthright Citizenship Change

A group of 22 states, led by Democrats, and several civil rights groups have filed lawsuits against President Trump’s executive order aiming to end birthright citizenship. The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Boston, argues that this order goes against the 14th amendment of the US constitution, which states that anyone born in the US is a citizen. The order targets children born to mothers who are not lawful permanent residents.

Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell stated, “President Trump can't just take away constitutional rights. ” This is one of the first major legal challenges to Trump’s agenda since he took office. More lawsuits are expected, with some already filed against other controversial orders he has signed. The cases will initially be reviewed by a court known for its Democratic appointees.
