Democratic States Sue Over Trump's Budget Freeze

A group of 24 Democratic attorneys general have decided to take legal action against the White House. Why? The attorneys general from states like New York, California, and Illinois are leading the charge. They argue that this move is unconstitutional and undermines Congress's authority. The memo sent by the Office of Management and Budget is unclear about which programs will be affected and what exactly it means by targeting policies like DEI and the Green New Deal.

Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Naronha criticized the memo's confusing language. California Attorney General Rob Bonta even joined a virtual press conference from a car, emphasizing the memo's ambiguity. New York Attorney General Letitia James went further, stating that the president has overstepped his authority. This directive could lead to a wave of lawsuits. Before the states took action, a coalition of nonprofits and health associations already asked a federal judge to block the memo. The judge temporarily paused the freeze until February 3 to allow for more legal debate.
