Aid distribution in Gaza is turning deadly.  On Tuesday, Israeli soldiers shot into a crowd of Palestinians heading to a food site in southern Gaza.  The Red Cross and Gaza health officials reported at least 27 people lost their lives.

This was not an isolated incident.  Just two days earlier, on Sunday, Israeli forces opened fire near the same aid site in Rafah.  Palestinian officials reported 23 deaths from that shooting.  The aid distribution site is a crucial lifeline for thousands of hungry Palestinians who gather there daily, hoping to secure some food.

The shootings happened about 500 yards from the aid site.  This is part of a new Israeli-backed system for distributing aid in Gaza.  American private contractors are in charge of handing out cardboard boxes filled with supplies.  The United Nations has spoken out against this new system.  They say the amount of aid being distributed is not enough to meet the needs of the people.

The UN has even accused the system of creating "engineered scarcity. "  This means the system is designed to give out less aid than is needed.  This is a serious accusation.  It suggests that the system is not just failing, but actively making the situation worse.

The situation in Gaza is desperate.  Thousands of people are going hungry every day.  They rely on these aid distributions to survive.  The shootings and the criticism from the UN raise serious questions about how aid is being distributed in Gaza.  It is clear that the current system is not working.  Something needs to change.
